Should Used Vending Machines Sites Look Old, Too?

Written by Daniel. Posted in General

VendingWorld Static Site

Call me a nitpicker. A vending machines armchair expert. A design hypocrite. After all, I’m preaching to all my clients that form should derive from function. But today, I am going to challenge myself and embrace a more flashy take on web design. Call it a Thursday evening rant, but don’t leave it unsanctioned if you think it crosses the line.

Case study? The VendingWorld website, snapshot above – the online front-end of an established company trading in sunny California, USA. I stumbled upon it mainly by accident and now I cannot get it out of my mind. Is it working for them? I guess it does. But here are the few usability / design points I’d like to make – feel free to add your own:

Make Your Site Easy To Read

The font is small. The menu is designed with mouse-type precision in mind. There is a lot of information on the homepage, and also a lot to take in. For many sites the homepage is the top of the funnel, and this site seems to be heavily optimized for organic search. But it should not do that at the expense of clean layout and navigation. Even Google will one day start to understand it’s not about how much content you put out there, but how your users interact with it.

Contextual Navigation Is Key

Anywhere you land on the VendingWorld site, the focus is on vending machines, their parts, their industry and supporting business model. But the visitor can easily be overwhelmed and not sure what he or she is expected to do. Clearly – to click somewhere and go to the next page, but what would that be? Calls-to-action could be highlighted better – sometimes leaving some white space around and making them bigger really helps CTAs stand out and lead visitors to the next page on their journey.

Clear Taxonomy Improves Navigation

Looking at the menu categories, it all seems to make sense. Until you realize certain models of used vending machines are supposed to be put forward, part of a time-limited sale (Sale Machines). Since they are not vending machines that dispense “sale” of any kind, they should not mingle with the rest of the machine models (snack, beverage, energy etc). Simple fix: create a separate menu entry, and highlight the time-limited factor to induce some pressure towards clicking on it. And don’t take my word for it – run an A/B test and figure it out properly. Maybe the purchase cycle for vending machines does not suit time-limited promotions and you’d be better discarding it altogether in favor of simplifying the site or better, replace it with another discount model (volume buy, value upsells etc).

Don’t Contact Us, We’ll Contact You – Email Submission Form

Okay, maybe not ask for quote, but ask a question. Leave your details. Enroll to our newsletter. Damn it, I will say it: “give us your e-mail address”. Sites bring leads. Leads bring business. Just do it and save yourself the embarrassment of NOT having a list. And if you’re at it, maybe offer me a visible phone number to reach you and even a live chat box during your opening hours.

Anyone For Vending Machines Photos?

When certain businesses go online, you know they are doomed with content challenges – my favorite ones are B2C coaching and consulting sites. They simply cannot provide any meaningful photos because their service and relation with the client is not visual in any way. But physical products, and especially some that have more detail and intricacies than wooden pellets or spare bulbs? Snap them and film them and put everything out there – Google Images is part of Universal Search results, and that drives real visits plus gives you a lot of cred in your industry. Gone already looking for the camera?

Mobile Is Not A Fad

Vending machines are by definition operating in locations remote from their owners – see about vending routes and all that. So it’s likely for your vending machine owner to be browsing from his mobile or tablet from some movie hall, school ground or train station, looking for advice, a spare part or a bargain on used vending machines someone already has in stock and ready to ship. Go mobile-friendly and snap that business early – just because the vending industry is venerable it does not mean your site has to be, too.

I hope these ideas help other businesses as well, or at least make my savvy readers reconsider who is it that they build websites for. If you have your own stories or critique to share, do not hesitate to reach out and submit your piece for publication. Have fun!

Everyone Looking For Email Marketing Advice Should Read This!

Written by Daniel. Posted in General

Email Marketing CompanyRegardless of how much you might hear about spam emails clogging up the Internet and Nigerian scams draining people’s bank accounts, the truth is that email marketing is a proven money maker. It is even perhaps the most affordable of all marketing mediums in terms of costs versus individuals reached. Read on to learn how you can tap into this tool.

What worked for you before might not work for you the next time around. That is why it is vital to always look into new email marketing strategies, and constantly seek new advice. Learn from others in your business niche, and always try out new methods to add to your arsenal of what works for your business.

Let your readers choose the layout of your content. Any messages with images, graphics and JavaScript is likely to get eaten by software filters and never seen by human eyes. Send out basic text or rich text format including a link to your website, and the option of an HTML version for those that want it.

Inform your customers what happens when they subscribe to your email list. Let them know the frequency of emails and the types of information they will receive. If it is possible, provide an area for them to check how many emails they want to receive each month. An example would be once a week or several times a month.

You may find that it is a good idea to devote a small portion of every marketing email you send out to briefly reviewing what your subscribers can expect from you. By demonstrating that you have a plan for your emails and you are sticking to it, you can encourage your readers’ trust and make them less likely to grow tired of your messages.

It is significantly more effective to build your own e-mail list for e-mail marketing than to purchase a list, or acquire the services of a marketing company that has their own lists. The reason for this is that everyone who submits their e-mail address to be a part of your list is interested in the services or products that you have to offer. These people are far more likely to be receptive to your e-mail.

Follow up with contacts you meet at trade shows. Collect people’s phone numbers when they stop by your table and call them within a couple of weeks of meeting them. Use the follow-up call to check in with your contact and ask him if he would like to receive your marketing newsletter by email.

Use the right font for the right message. Your font should be indicative of your style and email message, and not convey a message that you don’t wish to send. Choose one that is simple and popular, rather than one that you think is really cool, but not everyone may have.

Do not take up permanent residence in your readers inboxes. Remember that they email for a number a reasons, from work to family. You are probably sharing that space with other marketers. Send out messages often enough to stay on their mental radar, but more than once a week is probably going to annoy them and backfire.

Your job is only half finished once you hit the send button for your message. Follow up with any and all available analytic tools you have. Keep an eye out for the effectiveness of your message in terms of response. Follow up on anything that looks like it worked, like tailoring specific offers to sub-segments of your directory.

If you decided to read this article, it was because you were thinking about making money through email marketing. Now that you have read this article, you know a few points about approaching it. Apply the insights and advice provided in the previous paragraphs, and you can find success in email marketing.

Bootnote: Since publishing this article I got a lot of feedback and valuable ideas regarding the most effective email marketing strategies. I want to thank all of you and let you know I am considering compiling a follow-up article to cover everything we learned on the topic over the past couple of months. One thing stood up though and I thought it was worth adding here – white-label email marketing services. We are all used to the likes of Aweber, ConstantContact or Mailchimp – but for large companies and/or agencies offering their own internet marketing services associating with these public providers is not an easy co-branding decision. The alternative – and why everyone looking for email marketing advice should be aware of it – is that now you can run your email marketing campaign and even offer such services under your own domain name and brand with private label email marketing providers – I’ve been looking at ConstantClicky’s email marketing software offer and I found it an excellent solution, full of features and at a similar price which makes white label software an excellent tool in your brand management chest of tricks. If you ever tried private label software or ran a private email marketing service, I would like to hear from you – hit the contact us form and let me know.

VMware and Parallels Reviews Site Built with ElegantThemes’ InReview #fail

Written by Daniel. Posted in Elegantthemes, General

A couple of months ago one of my Skype contacts asked me which review-type of WordPress template to use for one of his new projects. I have to admit I had never done such a site myself (I think the reviews craze took place while I were traveling through Asia), so I had no quick answer to offer – and I had to go take a look at my favorite collections before coming back with an answer.

You probably don’t remember, but I used to be a big fan of ElegantThemes – call me lazy, but I like my cookie-cutter sites to look good out of the box and respect more or less the same general rules for configuration of various theme features (aka share a common framework). So without delay I went to check their InReview theme, hoping to get out of this before finishing my coffee.

As you can probably see for yourselves if you visit the link above, the theme has everything you would expect – stars, categories, fancy layout, good slider, custom widgets. Went ahead and made the recommendation, confident I could have not gone wrong. I remember distinctively congratulating myself for not wasting any more time on this.

Until yesterday, when the same very contact caught on to wish me Happy Birthday! (yes, mid-life crisis is approaching fast) and I got the latest on his project (See screenshot below)

VMware vs Parallels vs Oracle reviews site

So much for ElegantThemes, it seems – turned out their theme (remember, this is a paid premium WordPress template) has all the eye-candy a review site might need, except for rich snippets markup and any use for tags. If you want to get any SEO value from your reviews with this theme, you MUST have another plugin and duplicate the ratings (with all the consequences that stem from free plugins not showing fractional ratings etc.) And forget tags for improved taxonomy – they were simply deemed irrelevant and scrapped altogether by the authors.

My friend had gone way too far with deploying InReview to step back by the time he discovered these shortcomings. He worked around, with additional plugins and more time wasted – a partial failure that could have been avoided were I paying enough attention to details or if developers could be bothered to stay on top of the latest trends in rich search results.

Lesson learned, for both of us here – and until next time I invite you to check out vmx.biz for VMware coupon codes or simply to claim your FREE VMware Fusion 4 license on the site.
